That whole Czech nymphing thing was a hype overhere some time ago.
Since I am a sceptic I just thought whatever ....
One of my buddies however was a true believer and so he enrolled in a Czech nymph clinic in ... you guessed it the Czech republic.
So when we fished some east German stream he just had to convince me of this fishing technique and so I had a go at it.
I fished a pool the old way and caught two trout and a grayling, he fished the same pool after me and caught at least fifteen fish.
Then I tried it myself and so I stood in the stream fishing a ten feet long 4 weight rod with only a foot of flyline out. The leader was fitted with one of those spiral indicators so I could track the path of the team of nymphs exceptionally well.
What amazed me was:
a. the pool had more fish in it than I believed it could hold
b. with this technique you could see every take - with my floating bait indicator I missed most of the subtle strikes.
For the new season I want to try this method.
When some Czech collegues of mine came over for a visit I asked them to get me some literature on this subject so I got a nice book with flypatterns and a DVD about this short nymphing technique.
The DVD is made by Johan Klingberg from Sweden and is in both English and Swedish language. He visits the Czech republic and meets up with the people wo delevoped this kind of fishing in the Czech republic.
He fishes with several people who each show him their interpretation of this type of fishing. Interesting are the sections when they fish several different Czech rivers under varying circumstances.
After his visit to the Czech republic he shows how this technique works on his home river in Sweden.
So what you get is a good information film about the technique - info on the leader setup and flies to use and some flytying instructions.
Highly recommendable.
