The Angler's Net - Fly Fishing and Fly Tying

The Nation

The Spey Nation consists of a few hard working, like minded individuals dedicated to furthering the techniques and interests of double handed rods in the tributaries of the Great Lakes.  The idea came from a few conversations on www.salmoncrazy.com and has grown in a short time to what you see here.

Zach Brooks

I have been fishing with a two handed rod for six years now.  There is no going back! The best part about using a two handed rod, whether it is 10’ or 14’, is that your fly is in the water for a longer time over the course of the day. Efficiency my friends!  I enjoy a deeper flexing rod that recovers quickly. A two handed rod MUST change direction easily and with authority, which is why I like a more powerful tip on my rods, particularly for casting and managing sink tips.  For lines, I definitely go with mid to long belly lines that can handle tips for winter and fall applications. For me, stripping line is a waste when you can be onto another cast/swing by the time you strip in all that running line, just a personal preference. Swinging  flies for Steelhead and Salmon will surely test your patience and ability to commit, but the grab half way through a 70’ swing keeps me coming back for more! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even when the fish are sulking, Spey casting keeps me involved and allows me to thoroughly enjoy each and every outing! See you on the river….

Geoff started spey fishing the Great Lakes tributaries in 2004 and has never looked back.  He now fishes for Salmon and Steelhead as much as possible in Western New York from September to May and has expanded his 2 handed fishing to include  chasing Striped Bass, Trout, Smallmouth Bass and whatever else can be enticed to take a fly.
